A good SEO reporting tool is a necessary investment for any team investing in organic search.

Frankly, it’s table stakes.

It is much easier to have automated and/or customized reports with all your (or your clients’) important KPIs delivered on intervals, rather than to manually assemble and cross reference data every time.

Apart from helping you streamline your existing operations, a great SEO reporting software will also give you important information you need to run successful SEO campaigns.

What is SEO reporting software?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) reporting software is a system that analyzes your website and shows how it’s ranking in SERPs.

The best SEO software tracks metrics such as link clicks, URL compliance and keyword usage that can help your website rank high with major search engines like Google and Bing. They can conduct keyword research, study your competitors, identify broken links, explore backlinks and discover ways to further optimize your site.

You can also use SEO reporting software to audit your blog or website for technical issues like duplicate content, security problems, slow loading speeds, and server error pages.

3. Ahrefs

Ideal for: Professional SEOs and owners of small to large websites

G2 score: 4.6/5

Pricing: Ahrefs offers a 7-day trial for $7. Premium plans start at $82/month, billed annually

Originally launched in 2011 as a backlink analysis tool, Ahrefs is now a SaaS-based tool that lets you conduct comprehensive SEO and backlink analysis on any domain, including your competitors’. The stand-out feature of Ahrefs is that it has the largest backlink index in the world (over 22 trillion internal backlinks).

The Ahrefs dashboard shows you a graphical overview of the most important metrics for the websites you are monitoring. It shows you the metrics from the Site Explorer on traffic, authority and backlinks, a Site Health score from the Site Audit, and the ranking evolution for the keywords you track with the Rank Tracker.

Here’s a brief overview of these important Ahrefs features:

Site Explorer

With Ahrefs Site Explorer, you can search any page or website for a complete backlink analysis, an estimate of the number of keywords the site is ranking for, the traffic the site generates and its traffic value. At a glance, you will see a range of metrics for the site you’re exploring. These metrics include Ahrefs Rank, Domain Rating, Backlinks, Organic Keywords, Organic Traffic, Referring Domains and Traffic Value.

Rank Tracker

The Rank Tracker allows you to monitor your site for specific keywords in search engines. It shows you all the keywords you are ranking for and suggests associated keywords. This feature provides detailed information for every keyword you enter into the system and summarizes the information for your projects with SEO metrics like Average Position, Visibility, Traffic, SERP features, Positions, Distribution, Locations, Keywords, Competitors and Locations.

Site Audit

Ahrefs Site Audit tool crawls your site and gives you a Health Score based on the extensive analysis of the site. It also makes detailed suggestions as to the areas where you can improve your technical SEO.

Keyword Explorer

My favorite Ahrefs feature, the Keyword Explorer, helps you analyze keywords that rank on search engines. This feature goes beyond the traditional Google lookups as it integrates with YouTube, Amazon and international search engines like Yandex and Baidu.

Once you put in a keyword, you’ll have access to an extensive overview of keyword metrics like Keyword Difficulty, Search Volume, CPC, Return Rate, and Global Volume.

Up until recently, I used Ahrefs mainly for competitor analysis and keyword research, and I found it to be one of those tools that are very hard to hate. The only downside that really mattered to me was the price. I found it to be too expensive for my needs right now so I canceled my plan.

If I ever need an advanced SEO tool in the future (and I will soon), I’ll definitely renew my Ahrefs plan. It’s that good.

Key features of Ahrefs

  • Site Explorer
  • Site Audit tool
  • Keyword Explorer
  • Rank Tracker
  • Content Explorer
  • Domain Comparison
  • SEO Toolbar
  • Batch Analysis
  • Link Intersect
  • Alerts
  • Detailed SEO Analysis
  • Filters for data segmentation

Pros of Ahrefs

  • Ahrefs is straightforward and easy to navigate.
  • It lets you keep track of your rankings for different keywords over time.
  • It has excellent, site-specific crawling abilities.
  • With Ahrefs, you can track keywords based on devices and locations that span 170 countries.
  • Ahrefs updates its features and adds new functionalities regularly.
  • Ahrefs offers exceptional support with help on every web page, a comprehensive FAQ, and educational tutorials.

Cons of Ahrefs

  • Ahrefs does not offer a free plan or trial. It can also get really expensive.
  • This software is geared towards SEO experts—not beginners—and experienced digital marketers.
  • It does not have an affiliate program.
  • Although Ahrefs has great on-site help, it is difficult to get personalized support.

4. Google Search Console

Ideal for: Small businesses, websites and blogs

G2 Score: 4.6/5

Pricing: Google Search Console is a free SEO tool

Originally known as Google Webmaster Tools, Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool that helps users monitor their site’s performance, see backlinks, submit sitemaps, search traffic, and fix technical errors. It also helps to improve keyword rankings in Google SERPs.

I often use GSC to analyze my personal blog and I love it for a number of reasons. First, GSC is completely free (duh!). Second, it provides a wealth of information for all sorts of websites, especially those that represent businesses and brands.

Contrary to popular opinion, GSC isn’t just for researching new keyword ranking opportunities or organizing an SEO campaign. While this tool performs these functions well, it can also provide data that can help you streamline your SEO campaigns further.

In my opinion, the most valuable resource in GSC is the Performance Report. In this report, you can see important information about your site’s organic performance, and you can track important KPIs for your business’ continual growth. The Performance Report gives details about your site’s impressions, clicks, CTR and average position in Google Search.

This way, you can identify keywords with a high CTR and find the search queries that people use to find your website. You can also use the data to determine the keywords that can best reveal the behavior and search intent of your site visitors. This will help you know how to optimize your on-page content and create new content that will better match your current high-CTR and high-value traffic.

Most importantly, GSC can help you find and fix technical issues (manual penalties, crawling errors, malware detected, increase in 404 pages, etc.) to ensure that your web pages are properly indexed and are accessible to visitors. Whenever technical issues are detected on your site, GSC will send you email alerts, and when you have fixed those issues, you can notify Google of that.

In spite of all these positives, I don’t recommend using GSC as your only SEO tool. I noticed that the average position data can be inaccurate sometimes, especially if your site’s impressions and clicks are low. But I love that you can link your Google Analytics account to GSC.

If you don’t want to use GSC, Google Ads is a great alternative.

Key features of Google Search Console

  • Integration of Google Analytics
  • Submission of pages for indexing
  • Mobile-first indexing
  • Errors and unindexable pages
  • Assess user interaction
  • Page positioning in search results
  • Keyword analysis through search queries
  • Diagnosis of technical site issues
  • Alerts when site issues are detected

Pros of Google Search Console

  • GSC is completely free to use.
  • It has a clean, attractive interface.
  • GSC lets you measure the performance of your keyword campaigns easily.
  • You can track and monitor your website’s backlinks.
  • With GSC, you can identify and disavow bad links.
  • You can directly submit a sitemap to Google for crawling.
  • GSC gives you access to important site data like total impressions, total clicks, average CTR and position, location-based and device-based visits, and the search queries your website ranks for.
  • GSC helps you identify and fix technical errors that have to do with security, site indexation, site crawling, site loading, structured data and mobile usability.

Cons of Google Search Console

  • You cannot submit an HTML sitemap.
  • GSC doesn’t provide site data for any other search engines apart from Google.
  • Sometimes, the error page might not get updated quickly so the issues you have fixed might keep showing up.
  • The position ranking data provided might not be accurate unless you have a sizable amount of clicks and impressions.

5. SEMRush

Ideal for: Professional SEOs and businesses of any size

G2 Score: 4.5/5

Pricing: SEMRush offers a free 7-day trial. Paid plans start at $99.95/month, billed annually

Created in 2005, SEMRush is a full-featured SEO reporting tool that helps marketers and agencies in digital marketing aspects like keyword research, content marketing, PPC, competitor analysis, SEO, etc.

SEMRush provides a lot of information about your site, which you can use to create traffic-generating content, understand search intent, identify link building opportunities, and make changes to technical areas of your site to increase ranking in SERPs.

While I was in search of a good keyword research tool that would serve my blogging needs, I came upon SEMRush and I tried the free trial of the Pro plan. The first thing I noticed about this tool was its extensive feature set. With SEMRush, you can do just about anything—keyword research, advertising research, market exploration, backlinks research, SEO audits, rank tracking, and many more. You can even use it to track your social media stats and schedule posts for all your social media channels.

SEMRush’s interface is very visual. There are auto generated graphs and you can compare your domains and run competitive analysis in just a few clicks. There is a PPC Keyword tool that helps you collect keywords, and Ad Builder that helps you find inventive ad ideas and create HTML adverts for your Google Display Network campaigns.

My favorite feature of SEMRush though, was the SEO Writing Assistant. It helps you optimize your article or content based on your top 10 Google rivals. With this add-on, you can scan your content for originality and improve your content’s readability, while maintaining your brand’s voice.

On top of all this, SEMRush offers an active SEO marketing community to help you learn more about SEO and inform you of the ever-evolving SEO best practices. It also seamlessly integrates with useful SEO tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console.

Key features of SEMRush

  • Keyword research
  • Traffic analysis
  • Keyword Magic Tool
  • SEO Writing Assistant

  • Social media tracker
  • Audience insights
  • Website Audit
  • Link monitoring
  • On-page SEO checker
  • Backlink checker
  • Ad builder
  • Market explorer
  • Automated reports
  • PPC keyword tool

Pros of SEMRush

  • This tool can help you track a competitor’s rankings and compare it with yours. In fact, you can add up to ten competitor domains in your SEO campaign.

  • SEMRush provides detailed reports in your domain analysis and SEO audits.
  • You can run a location-based search to know the local competitors ranking in the first ten pages of Google SERPs for any keyword.
  • SEMRush will notify you via email every week if there are any ranking changes.
  • Even on the entry-level plan, SEMRush lets you pull a generous amount of domain analysis reports daily—3,000 reports, to be exact.
  • SEMRush offers phone, email and live chat support.

Cons of SEMRush

  • Just like Ahrefs, SEMRush can get really pricey.
  • SEMRush has a bit of a learning curve, so you might need tutorials to be able to make sense of all the information provided.
  • The information provided by SEMRush is applicable to Google only. There is no data for other search engines like Yahoo and Bing.
  • The highest plan on the price tier (Business plan) only allows one user account. If you want more than one person to have access to your account, you’ll have to pay extra money per user.
  • SEMRush does not provide information about the number of backlinks you need to rank for a keyword.
  • You’ll only get access to API credits if you’re on the Business plan.

Link Explorer uses industry metrics to access and analyze top links that help find new link opportunities (through competitor domains), discover unlinked mentions and reclaim broken links. You can also search and remove potentially harmful links that can get you penalized.

Moz’s Site Crawl tool highlights several serious technical issues on your website, including missing title tags, faulty redirects, duplicate content and response code errors that can reduce your SEO performance. If you are on a tight budget, you could take advantage of the free tools on this list– Google Analytics, Google Search Console and Google Data Studio. Nevertheless, you should pair these tools with other complementary tools to get better results and lighten your workload. GrowthBar and AgencyAnalytics are great options for this purpose as their paid plans are a bit cheaper.

If you have multiple clients or you run an agency, tools like SEMRush, Ahrefs, Databox and AgencyAnalytics will serve you well. SEMRush and Ahrefs are particularly great options if you need a full SEO suite rather than just a reporting tool. Databox is great if you need a tool for just your website as it has a free forever plan.

If you want to test the waters before purchasing a tool, then you should definitely check out Moz Pro and AgencyAnalytics. Moz gives a whopping 30-day free trial!

In all, your choice of the right SEO reporting tool for you should depend on the kind of business you run, your business needs and your budget.

Writing content of any kind takes a lot of effort and energy.

If you’re a digital marketer, content writer or SEO copywriter, writing is a major part (or maybe even the only part) of your work, and grammatical errors or spelling mistakes can throw all your hard work right down the drain.

Poor grammar can damage the credibility of blog articles, how-to guides, case studies, eBooks and other marketing resources. It can cause a loss of potential customers, reduce the quality of user experience and affect the growth of a business directly.

The most popular grammar checking tool on the market right now is Grammarly, but it is far from the only one.

What is Grammarly?

Founded in 2009 and used by over 30 million people daily, Grammarly is an AI-powered proofreading and grammar checking tool used to detect punctuation mistakes and grammatical errors. These errors include bad sentence structure, syntax errors, subject-verb mismatch, etc. Grammarly also provides suggestions that can help your sentences read better.

Apart from the grammar and punctuation checker, Grammarly also consists of other tools to help users write better:

  • A spell checker that helps users prevent and correct misspellings.
  • A plagiarism checker that compares your content to about 16 billion articles on the internet to prevent duplication.
  • A writing style checker that helps improve readability and ensure that your writing style aligns with the kind of audience you are trying to reach.

Pros of Grammarly

  • Grammarly is very user-friendly.
  • It boasts a high level of accuracy for checking spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • It is available for both desktop (Windows and Mac) and mobile (Android, iOS and iPadOS) devices.
  • It is fast and checks errors in real-time.
  • Grammarly comes with autosave and recovery features.
  • It has a plagiarism checker.
  • It works with many variations of the English language—American English, British English, Canadian English, Australian English, etc.
  • Grammarly is available as a browser extension for popular browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Safari.
  • Grammarly integrates seamlessly with other writing software like Microsoft Word, Google Docs and Medium.
  • Grammarly constantly adds features to and improves on the software.

Cons of Grammarly

  • Grammarly does not offer an offline editing option.
  • The premium version can seem expensive, especially to users who don’t need all the extra features.
  • There can be lags when editing large amounts of text.
  • Grammarly only works in English.

1. Hemingway Editor

Ideal for: Authors, bloggers, content writers and marketers

G2 Score: 4.9/5

Pricing: Hemingway’s web version is free. The desktop app costs $19.99 (one-time fee).

The Hemingway App is a writing and editing tool designed to help writers produce concise and polished content. It analyses the writing style of a writer and identifies common grammatical errors that reduce the quality of a piece of content. Some of the grammar errors Hemingway App focuses on are:

  • Excessive passive voice
  • Wordy sentence construction
  • Overuse of adverbs
  • Complex paragraphs
  • Weak words/phrasing

I use the Hemingway App just as much as I use Grammarly to analyze my content. What I love most about the Hemingway App is that it separates the writing and editing functionalities, which allows writers to focus on writing first before editing. The Writing Mode is a distraction-free environment that allows writers to write without interference. While using Hemingway, a person can easily toggle between the writing and editing modes.

Hemingway’s Writing Mode

When you switch to the Editing Mode, most of Hemingway’s features get activated. Hemingway analyzes your content and highlights potential problem areas. No matter what Hemingway suggests, it is totally up to the writer to implement or ignore the advice. The editor app works with color-coded highlights. The different colors make it easier to identify the kind of error your content has.

  • Blue Highlights indicate weak words, especially qualifiers or adverbs. It suggests improvements for bolder writing sans redundancy.
  • Green Highlights denote the use of passive voice. Although active voice makes for more engaging writing, passive voice is sometimes appropriate. In this case, a writer can ignore the green highlights.
  • Yellow Highlights point out rambling and complex sentences.
  • Purple Highlights show complicated phrases or words that might confuse a reader. Typically, a writer is supposed to replace the convoluted words or phrases with simpler ones.
  • Red Highlights indicate extremely wordy and complicated sentences that negatively influence readability.

Hemingway’s Editing Mode

Hovering over these color highlights will show you the kind of problem that has been identified. However, not all error types offer hints for fixes. You can remove adverbs easily (with the click of a button), but you have to change a sentence from passive to active voice by yourself.

In the sidebar, you can find the total number of suggested improvements, the readability score (calculated according to the Automated Readability Index) and word count. The counter also includes the average reading time, and the number of letters, characters, words, sentences and paragraphs in the text.

The free online version works for both Android and iOS. The desktop version supports MacOSx for Mac users.

Key features of Hemingway Editor

  • Color-coded errors
  • Write and Edit Modes
  • Readability score
  • Formatting features
  • Import from and export to other writing platforms

Pros of Hemingway Editor

  • Hemingway Editor is very easy-to use. You don’t even have to log in to analyze text.
  • The software has a simple, but intuitive, interface.
  • It has separate modes for writing and editing.
  • It gives writers the choice to implement or ignore suggestions. There are no auto-corrections.
  • It provides an estimated reading time, which helps writers explore reader engagement.
  • Writers have the option to write and edit in the desktop app and export it directly to WordPress as a draft.
  • The offline editor helps writers edit their work anywhere they are.
  • There are no word limitations in the web editor.

Cons of Hemingway Editor

  • It is not a spelling or grammar checker.
  • With the free version, writers cannot save or import their work.
  • Most highlights don’t offer suggestions on how to fix the identified problem.

2. Readable

Ideal for: Authors, bloggers, copywriters and marketers

G2 Score: 4.5/5

Pricing: Readable offers a free trial. Paid plans start at $4/month, billed annually.

Readable is a content marketing tool that helps businesses optimize their content by scanning and scoring the readability of their web content. This score checker shows how readable your content is on a scale of 0 to 100.

Apart from businesses (marketers), Readable is also designed to help writers (including authors, accountants, marketers, copywriters, doctors, lawyers, and teachers) improve the readability of their content and boost sales. A higher score (70 and above) means that most readers would be able to easily read and understand your content. A score lower than 60 means that your text needs to be tweaked to be more readable.

Readable is powered by powerful algorithms that allow it to deliver scoring results quickly. These algorithms include Flesch Reading Ease, Automated Readability Index, Gunning Fog Index, SMOG Index, Coleman-Liau Index, IELTS and CEFR, Spache and New Dale-Chall, etc.

Readable analyzes the readability of a piece of text and suggests the best ways to improve on it so that readers would engage better. It utilizes factors like average word length, word familiarity, syllable count, sentence length, and sentence structure to calculate accurate readability scores. This software also highlights long words, long sentences, and passive voice usage, allowing writers to tweak them accordingly.

There is no limit to what you can analyze with Readable. The app has the tools you need to score text, Word docs, emails, HTML/web pages, individual URLs, PDF, eBooks, and bulk scoring. It can easily examine an entire website and identify content that needs optimization along with ways they can be fixed.

Readable does not only measure the readability of content. It also examines keyword density and text quality to show you a range of statistics that can make your content easier to understand. It also provides comprehensive reports with a breakdown of the major points.

Although Readable has a lot of strong points and features, it lacks some advanced facilities that are generally present in genuine writing tools.

Key features of Readable

  • Website scoring
  • Readability scoring
  • Readability API
  • Email scoring
  • URL analysis
  • Bulk scoring
  • Keyword density
  • Readability reports

Pros of Readable

  • Readable has a clean and simple interface.
  • Writers can import and export documents as different file formats like Doc, PDF, HTML or text spreadsheet.
  • Readable can scan and score emails, individual URLs and whole websites.
  • Because Readable is web-based, users are not required to download an app before use.
  • Readable’s customer support is courteous and satisfactory.
  • Readable supports web-based, Windows and Mac devices.

Cons of Readable

  • With Readable, writers cannot make and save different versions of the same content.
  • Readable does not have a storyboard or writing template. Users cannot create their own writing templates either.
  • Readable does not allow users to share files directly from the app or collaborate with others on a project.

3. Linguix

Ideal for: Solopreneurs, marketers and large businesses

G2 score: 4.5/5

Pricing: Linguix offers a free version for basic spelling and grammar checks. Paid plans start at $8/month, billed annually.

Developed by linguists, professional writers and language technology experts, Linguix is not your typical grammar checking tool. It is a smart writing and editing assistant that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to help users adequately optimize their content. It is designed to improve the users’ writing standards and enhance their writing quality in all aspects.

Although it has the conventional spelling and grammar checkers, Linguix does more than check for spelling and grammatical errors. Its powerful AI and algorithms learn the tendencies, writing style, structure and word choices of each user. It sets the test against more than 2,000 rules on context and provides the user with smart recommendations to improve their writing. Linguix’s premium version offers tools such as templates and performance statistics, which helps users ensure that their writing is shown to the right audience.

Immediately after signing up, Linguix will ask about the purpose of your writing and will also ask you to select the areas you think you need help with when it comes to writing. This process helps you personalize your service even before you start scanning anything.

Users can set the tone of the text and utilize the Helper function to help them write a document that will sound more exciting or calming. After you have done this, you will have a list of flagged errors—redundancy, spelling mistakes, stylistic issues, etc. You can hover over the mistakes and fix them by accepting Linguix’s suggestions. You can also add words into your personal dictionary. These words are those that you commonly use but cannot be found in a conventional dictionary. Once these words are in your personal dictionary, Linguix will make an exception to them.

After scanning a document, Linguix notifies users of grammatical errors in their text and provides multiple suggestions on how to fix them. It also supplies synonyms and phrases as well as corrections of spelling mistakes and removal of typos, poor phrasing, and wrong sentence structures.

Partnering with CopyLeaks, Linguix lets users quickly check their document against its database of billions of web articles. It will show which sentences or paragraphs were copied and the source from which they were lifted.

Linguix can be used to analyze any kind of write-up, be it personal, professional or academic. It is a wonderful tool for people who write blog articles, social media posts, convincing personal opinions and essays. 4. ProWritingAid

Ideal for: Bloggers, content writers, novelists and entrepreneurs

G2 Score: 4.4/5

Pricing: ProWritingAid offers a free trial. Paid plans start at $20 for monthly subscription.

ProWritingAid is a writing assistant and grammar checker that helps clean up all kinds of written content by identifying grammar and spelling mistakes, contextual errors and plagiarized content. It allows writers to erase errors, fix grammatical and punctuation mistakes, and optimize their articles.

Although ProWritingAid can be used to analyze any type of written content, it really shines when it comes to fiction writing. I write crime fiction and short stories, and use ProWritingAid to analyze my prose. Every time I use this software, I’m blown away by how it highlights vague or incorrect text and suggests a ton of improvements. It scans for vague wording, passive voice usage, repetitiveness, overuse of adverbs, complex sentence constructions, sentence length variations and many more.

ProWritingAid has a built-in Word Explorer that helps writers find the right words to convey their message clearly. This feature contains a Thesaurus, dictionary, collocation dictionary, reverse dictionary, alliteration dictionary, cliché dictionary, contextually related words, and examples from songs, poetry and prose. These functions improve readability of text and help to expand a user’s vocabulary as they explore different words and phrases.

ProWritingAid offers style and grammar check scores in real-time. It provides comprehensive explanations of flagged errors and suggests corrections to enable writers to easily learn how to improve on their content. This application is especially helpful for students in writing assignments because it has a plagiarism checker that identifies sentences that were plagiarized and the links from which those sentences were copied.

Key features of ProWritingAid

  • Detailed explanations
  • In-depth reports
  • Contextual Thesaurus reports
  • Seamless integrations with other writing platforms

Pros of ProWritingAid

  • ProWritingAid provides accurate readability and grammar recommendations.

  • It comes with browser extensions for Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

  • Although ProWritingAid provides thorough insight into your work, it cannot replace a real editor or mentor.

5. PaperRater

Ideal for: Students, teachers, writers and online marketers

G2 Score: 4.4/5

Pricing: PaperRater offers a free plan. Paid plans start at $7.95/month, billed annually.

PaperRater is an AI-powered proofreading software that helps writers improve the quality of their text. This tool makes use of Natural Language Processing, Data Mining, Information Retrieval, Machine Learning and Computational Linguistics to check for spelling and grammar mistakes, and to scan content for plagiarism.

While PaperRater can be used to scan any type of writing including blog articles, professional documents and social media copy, it was mainly designed for students (writing assignments, academic essays, etc.).

To scan content, you can type, copy-paste or upload it into the open field on PaperRater’s website. PaperRater gives users the option to indicate the type of content submitted—articles and reviews, essays and stories, business correspondence, etc. There is also an option to indicate the educational level of the writer of the content, ranging from 1st grade to post-graduate students. These specifications allow the tool to make amendments that align with the needs of the writer.

PaperRater’s grammar and spelling checker will analyze the content, identify mistakes and suggest changes in real-time. It also instructs writers as to why it is important to tweak specific parts of their content. Because PaperRater is designed with advanced technologies (AI and data science), it can deliver results in less than 15 seconds without compromising on the proofreading.

Apart from being a writing aid and proofreader, PaperRater is also a plagiarism checker tool. This feature uses the search indexes of all major search engines to extensively scan content and identify copied work. It shows the percentage of plagiarized text and the links from which the duplicated content was lifted.

Personally, I would not trust PaperRater’s plagiarism detector. In the piece I scanned, I made sure to include some text that has already been published on another blog just to see how well the tools with free plagiarism checkers performed. As you can see in the image above, PaperRater evaluated the text and estimated that it is 100% original – which is 100% untrue. Just a heads up in case you decide to go for this tool.

There is also a premium Vocabulary Builder tool that helps users learn more complex words and how to use them properly. This feature is great for people and students who may not be very familiar with the English language.

Key features of PaperRater

  • Vocabulary builder
  • Automated scoring
  • Unlimited total submissions
  • Premium-only modules
  • Grammar exercises
  • Advanced plagiarism detector

Pros of PaperRater

  • PaperRater delivers scan results very quickly. Grammar and sentence structure checks take 15 seconds, while plagiarism checks take about 30 seconds.
  • PaperRater accurately identifies big spelling errors and tense issues.
  • Since PaperRater is web-based, users are not required to download any app or software to use it.
  • Users don’t need to sign up or log in to use PaperRater.
  • PaperRater’s customer service is available on all work days during work hours.

Cons of PaperRater

  • PaperRater’s website is filled with ads that can be misleading.
  • While PaperRater is great for academic writing, it is not very good for conversational writing styles.
  • PaperRater follows AP style so it might not be ideal to use if your content is written in a different grammar style.
  • PaperRater can only be accessed via the website. There is no mobile or add-on function.
  • Free users can perform only 10 plagiarism checks per month and each check must not be longer than 1,500 words.
  • PaperRater does not allow users to export their plagiarism reports as a PDF.

6. LanguageTool

Ideal for: Non-native English speakers and writers

G2 Score: 4.2/5

Pricing: LanguageTool offers a free forever plan. Premium plans start at $2.46/month, billed annually for individual users.

LanguageTool is an online grammar solution and proofreading tool used by individuals and businesses to fix grammatical problems in their text or articles.

One thing that sets LanguageTool apart from other free Grammarly alternatives is its ability to detect spelling errors, grammar mistakes and writing problems in different languages including English, French, Spanish, Dutch, German, Polish and Russian. It also considers variations of languages. For example, LanguageTool acknowledges the differences between American and British English when it scans content for grammar and spelling errors.

With LanguageTool, users can add words to a customizable personal dictionary. These words are those that are commonly used by the user but cannot be found in a conventional dictionary. Once these words are added to the dictionary, LanguageTool will exclude them from the spelling and grammar rules it applies to the text.

LanguageTool can be used as a web browser extension for Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. It can also be used as an add-on for Microsoft Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice. This tool also provides keyboard shortcuts to help users proofread their text faster.

Key Features of LanguageTool

  • Personal dictionary
  • Multi-language support
  • Add-on and browser extensions
  • Ruled-based corrections
  • Enable and disable rules
  • Keyboard shortcuts

Pros of LanguageTool

  • LanguageTool’s grammar checker is pointedly accurate.
  • It can detect grammar and spelling errors in over 20 languages.
  • The free version includes a limit of 20,000 characters per check, which is high compared to other Grammarly alternatives.
  • While the free tool helps users to write more clearly, the premium plan is extra concise and precise.
  • LanguageTool has developed many plugins and add-ons for programs like Android and CheckMate.
  • LanguageTool has an accessible forum that is filled with helpful content.

Cons of LanguageTool

  • LanguageTool does not have a plagiarism detector.
  • LanguageTool does not detect the uses of passive voice.
  • It does not list the style guide it uses to analyze text.

7. Ginger Software

Ideal for: Non-native English speakers and writers

G2 Score: 4.1/5

Pricing: Ginger Software offers a free plan. Premium plans start at $6.99/month, billed biannually.

Ginger Software is a grammar and spell checker tool that helps writers polish their content and improve their writing style by making corrections and suggestions as the user types. This is to help them immediately fix their mistakes and save some time with the editing process.

This tool is designed with intelligent algorithms that ensure that text corrections are based on the context of the sentence rather than on individual words. Analyzing the context of a sentence before making suggestions allows Ginger Software to make accurate and precise corrections.

Ginger Software also gives users access to a tool that allows them to rephrase their sentences in different kinds of ways to avoid repetitiveness. There is also a dictionary at hand that enables writers to check whether the word they’re using in a phrase or sentence is contextually appropriate.

In addition to correcting mistakes, Ginger Software also gives users access to its learning center so that they can have tailored training to improve their English skills. Their progress is also tracked to keep them motivated in increasing their knowledge.

For users who speak a language different from English, Ginger Software makes it easy for them to analyze their content as it can translate text to over 60 languages.

Features of Ginger Software

  • Grammar checker
  • Punctuation checker
  • Spell checker
  • Dictionary
  • Personal trainer
  • Mistake practice
  • Error analysis
  • Translation
  • Sentence rephrasing
  • Text reader

Pros of Ginger Software

  • Ginger Software is very easy to install and use.
  • Unlike many other Grammarly alternatives, this tool does not impose any limits on premium users.
  • Ginger Software has an abundance of language diversity as it offers its services in more than 60 different languages.
  • Ginger Software can be downloaded directly into Chrome or Safari web browsers.
  • It integrates well with programs like Gmail, Outlook, Microsoft Office (entire suite), Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.
  • Ginger Software can be used on Android and iOS gadgets.
  • It has a desktop app that can be installed on both Windows and Mac operating systems.

Cons of Ginger Software

  • Ginger Software does not have a plagiarism checking tool.
  • Free users are only allowed to do 14 scans per month.
  • Ginger Software does not provide reports on the issues identified within a text.

8. WhiteSmoke

Ideal for: Non-native English speakers and writers

G2 Score: 4.0/5

Pricing: WhiteSmoke does not offer a free plan or free trial. Paid plans start at $3.47/month billed triennially (for three years), and $5.00/month, billed yearly.

WhiteSmoke is a full-featured grammar, writing and plagiarism checker that is accessible on web, desktop and mobile. Widely considered to be one of the best Grammarly alternatives around, WhiteSmoke works with Natural Language Processing, an advanced technology that uses AI and algorithms to analyze text and search for grammatical and contextual errors.

The grammar checking tool and punctuation checker searches for common grammatical errors such as run-on sentences, fragments, double negatives, incomplete sentences, subject-verb disagreements, tense shifts, comma splices, capitalization, object clauses, spelling mistakes, misused words, missing words, fused sentences, and punctuation errors, amongst others.

When you paste your content into the blank form in WhiteSmoke’s interface, the system immediately begins to underline mistakes, make corrections, and tell you what types of mistakes it has identified. It uses a color-coding system to highlight each kind of mistake—red indicates spelling mistakes, green denotes grammatical error and purple shows that there is a stylistic issue.

In addition to offering suggestions and corrections, WhiteSmoke also gives text and video tutorials that explain the errors and corrections to the users. This is probably my favorite WhiteSmoke feature because it helps users to better understand the process of creating quality content. It also improves the users’ understanding of English and its applications.

WhiteSmoke also has a reporting system that gives users an outline of the mistakes and corrections in the test. If the user is a corporation, WhiteSmoke will provide custom-made applications tailored to the corporation’s specific business needs to help them improve their correspondences and project a more professional image in their markets.

Key features of WhiteSmoke

  • Translation
  • Dictionary
  • Video tutorials
  • Document and letter templates
  • Text enrichment
  • Error explanations

Pros of WhiteSmoke

  • WhiteSmoke is available on both Windows and Mac devices.
  • It has a native application available for both Android and iOS devices.
  • The Pro version of WhiteSmoke’s mobile app comes with a translator that can translate 55 languages on the go.
  • WhiteSmoke provides users with over 100 ready-made templates for letters and documents.
  • WhiteSmoke’s plagiarism is accurate and can hold its own when pitted against Grammarly.
  • WhiteSmoke works with web browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge.

Cons of WhiteSmoke

  • WhiteSmoke’s desktop application has a search limit of 10,000 characters. This means that if you need to scan a long piece, you have to run several scans. This, however, does not apply to the web-based application.
  • Essential and premium plan users only get a license for one computer. The most expensive plan comes with only three licenses, which is very limited.
  • It can be a bit difficult to find the plagiarism checker on the desktop app.
  • The customer support can be really slow at times.

Did you find the best Grammarly alternative for you?

Grammarly is great, no doubt, but there are several other writing assistants that are equally as good. Depending on your specific writing needs, you might even find some of these tools to be better than Grammarly.

If you are a fiction writer like me, then you might wanna check out ProWritingAid and Hemingway Editor. These tools are great for checking for spelling and grammar errors (ProWritingAid), and refining your writing style (both).

If you’re a student, however, and you need a writing checker tool to scan your academic essays and theses, you should look into PaperRater and ProWritingAid. If you need a reliable plagiarism detector, you might want to substitute PaperRater for Linguix. ProWritingAid’s plagiarism detector is good, too.

If you’re a non-native English speaker and you need a tool that can translate and/or check your content in a different language, LanguageTool, Ginger Software and WhiteSmoke are your best bets. They’re relatively easy to use and support tons of languages. Plus WhiteSmoke has a plagiarism checking tool to boot.

Readable and Linguix are great if you’re a content writer, copywriter, blogger, or marketer. Linguix also works really well if you have a large business.

At the end of the day, the Grammarly alternative you choose should be based on the kind of text you’re analyzing, your needs/goals, and your budget.

Email marketing is officially one of the best ways businesses can increase their website traffic and revenue.

According to a report by Statista.com, approximately 300 billion emails were sent and received every day worldwide in 2020 alone. The latest stats also show that 87 percent of marketers use email marketing to distribute their business content. Those are some pretty high figures, if you ask me.

Whether you just started your business or you’ve been around for quite some time (and growing), you probably understand just how beneficial email marketing is to your business.

However, it takes a lot of time, effort, and resources to craft manual email newsletters. Even if this is a part of your business, it’s hard to truly scale an email marketing program without some form of automation,

This is where autoresponders come in to save the day.

Autoresponders allow you to send automated emails when a customer takes a specific action like subscribing to your email list, or purchasing a product. Users can also use responders to create email sequences based on certain rules, conditions or triggers.

Editor’s note: I’m going to use some affiliate links when possible to try to earn some revenue from my content. These don’t change the opinions espoused in the content nor the style in which they are written. If I think a product sucks, I’m not going to say otherwise. This is just a bonus and a way to fund the whole operation. Anyway, enjoy the article!

Ideal for: Startups, small businesses, and SMEs

Overall G2 Score: 4.4/5

Pricing: HubSpot Email Marketing Tools is completely free. The Marketing Hub, however, is paid and prices start at $50/month.

Founded in 2006, HubSpot is a pioneer of inbound marketing and a versatile growth platform. This company helps businesses create and measure successful and efficient marketing campaigns. It does this by offering all the necessary tools businesses can use to manage their email marketing, website analytics, social media, blogging, etc. in one full-featured package.

HubSpot offers five major products: Marketing Hub, Service Hub, CMS Hub, Operations Hub and Sales Hub, all of which give businesses the ability to run their operation smoothly. In 2019, HubSpot launched their completely free email marketing platform.

On this platform, basic email autoresponder tools come with a CRM. Users are given an option to turn a single email into a series of automated emails. This series can be activated by different triggers, which include a customer filling out a signup form, customer interaction with emails and adverts, and product page views.

Users can pick any trigger or condition they like and create as many steps in their sequences as they want. HubSpot Marketing Hub is also really flexible and users can set their automations to run for a set period of time or to run only during certain email campaigns.

Key features of HubSpot Email Marketing Tools

  • Drag-and-drop email editor
  • Landing pages
  • Signup forms and popups
  • A/B split testing

  • Autoresponders

  • Through closed loop reporting, users can analyze the ROI of their inbound strategy.

Cons of HubSpot Email Marketing Tools,

  • HubSpot Marketing Hub can get really expensive, especially if you don’t use all the features.
  • HubSpot’s functionalities may be limited for larger businesses that have complex sales operations.
  • The lower packages don’t have A/B split testing.
  • The email templates are somewhat limited compared to other free autoresponder software.
  • Users have to pay to get technical support.

4. ConvertKit

Ideal for: SMEs and content creators (bloggers, artists, musicians, YouTubers, etc.)

Overall G2 Score: 4.4/5

Pricing: There is a free plan for up to 1,000 subscribers. Paid plans start at $29/month.

ConvertKit is a powerful email marketing platform that was built to enable online creators such as bloggers, podcasters, YouTubers, freelancers, etc. build strong relationships with their audience. ConvertKit is extremely easy to use and boasts a wide range of features. With ConvertKit, users can create sign up forms and pop ups, send personalized emails to their contacts and set up automation workflows.

I have used ConvertKit as the ESP of choice for multiple blogs, and based on my experience, the autoresponder tools were really good. I’m not tech-savvy at all and I really love it when the ESP I’m using ‘thinks’ for me. ConvertKit does exactly this; it makes the creation of automated workflows and autoresponder series a breeze.

Users can begin to create complex autoresponders by selecting an action, condition or event. This includes filling out a form, adding and tagging new subscribers, and purchasing a product. If a user is not sure what path would work best to accomplish their goals, ConvertKit offers automation templates they can use. These templates include launching a product, hosting a webinar, and following up with customers that haven’t purchased.

ConvertKit provides IFTT (if this, then that) automation rules that users can use to create unique workflows to develop their customer journeys. Users can link actions, events and conditions with a simple click and the following steps can be auto-populated to guide subscribers towards conversion.

Although ConvertKit is really great for automations, I find the email editor to be basic, really basic. There’s no drag-and-drop editor and users can only change the fonts, color, italics, bold, etc. The autoresponder tools are good but not great. This makes sense because ConvertKit is meant for online creators that don’t really need anything too advanced to manage their lists.

Meanwhile, ConvertKit EXCELS at helping users manage their lists and send opt-in incentives and digital products. The tool is also really easy to use and has a low learning curve.

Key features of ConvertKit

  • Autoresponders
  • Landing page and email templates
  • Landing page builder
  • WYSIWYG email editor
  • Drip campaigns
  • A/B split testing
  • Customizable CTA buttons
  • Detailed reports, analytics and ROI tracking
  • Automated funnels and sequences
  • Marketing automated options
  • Subscriber management
  • Sale of digital products and subscriptions
  • Nifty segmentation and tagging system
  • Great customer support

Pros of ConvertKit

  • ConvertKit is simple and easy to use.
  • ConvertKit does not charge for duplicate subscribers.
  • ConvertKit has excellent automation functionality.
  • Users can create multiple forms for different lead incentives.
  • ConvertKit has a wonderful delivery mechanism for opt-in incentives.
  • Users can set up their accounts within minutes and start designing landing pages/forms right away.
  • Users can segment customers and assign tags to them in a myriad of ways.
  • The landing page editor is easy to use.
  • ConvertKit integrates seamlessly with membership sites and platforms like Teachable and WordPress.

Cons of ConvertKit

  • Users cannot use the automation features on the free plan. They have to upgrade to the paid plan to do this.
  • The landing page and email templates lack flexibility and customization options.
  • ConvertKit cannot test emails for autoresponders.
  • ConvertKit does not integrate with e-commerce platforms
  • The A/B testing feature is limited to only subject lines.

5. MailChimp

Ideal for: Individuals and SMBs

Overall G2 Score: 4.3/5

Pricing: MailChimp offers a free plan that allows users to send 10,000 emails/month to up to 2,000 subscribers. Paid plans start at $9.99/month.

It’s safe to say that MailChimp is the most popular email marketing platform in the market right now. This email marketing tool helps small businesses capture email leads and engage with their audience through its variegated templates, and powerful automation features.

I used MailChimp on the first blog I created. Granted, my list was small but I still automated my emails (because I’m lazy—and smart, too) using the available autoresponders and automation tools. MailChimp offers all the basic stuff like welcome messages, anniversary emails and customer journey workflows, but it also has advanced features like add retargeting, automated digital ads, social media posts, and even postcards.

Its major focus, though, is in the digital space. The autoresponders provided by MailChimp are mostly behavior-based. Therefore, users are able to set up rules for sending follow up emails based on behavioral triggers like an email sign-up and abandoned carts.

The free MailChimp plan has links to seven marketing channels that users can automate, but the actual marketing autoresponders only allow users to make 1-step automations. This means that users can only create simple messages and sequences for their list.

If you need complex automated workflows, you can check out some MailChimp alternatives. This article will also show you how MailChimp holds up compared to another wildly popular email marketing service, MailerLite right here.

Key features of MailChimp

  • Drag-and-drop email editor
  • Landing pages
  • Pre-built form templates
  • Multivariate testing
  • Contact management and segmentation
  • Automated drip campaigns
  • Marketing CRM
  • Social media marketing
  • Marketing automation options
  • Advanced analytics
  • Predicted data insights
  • Send time optimization
  • Delivery by time zone
  • Email and live chat support

Pros of MailChimp

  • MailChimp’s free plan lets users use simple autoresponders. It’s great if you only want a bit of automation.
  • The user interface is sleek and has a low learning curve.
  • MailChimp offers autoresponders for welcome series, behavior-based automation, date-based communications, and RSS-to-email sharing.
  • There are e-commerce tools that send out automated messages for abandoned carts, order notifications, payment confirmations, etc.
  • MailChimp offers customer loyalty workflows like customer re-engagement and product follow-ups.
  • MailChimp offers a tool that helps users find their audience based on similar audiences in the same industry. This improves users’ future marketing techniques.
  • The live built-in previewer can help users see what their emails would look like on different devices before sending them.
  • MailChimp integrates with over 300 third-party apps including WordPress, Canva, Help Scout, and EventBrite.

Cons of MailChimp

  • MailChimp’s paid plans can get really expensive as a user’s list grows.
  • MailChimp’s branding will feature on the emails you send with the free plan.
  • If you’re on the free plan, you won’t be able to create a multi-step autoresponder series.
  • MailChimp doesn’t have a visual workflow editor for autoresponders. This can cause users to be confused while managing their autoresponder series.
  • Users cannot create custom automations on MailChimp, and the pre-built automation workflows available are limited.
  • MailChimp’s emails often land in Gmail’s Promotion tab as opposed to the main inbox.
  • The free plan allows email support for only the first 30 days. After that, you’ll only have knowledge base documents to help you solve your problems.
  • Although MailChimp’s autoresponder tools are great, they aren’t as powerful as those of their competitors.

6. Aweber

Ideal for: SMBs and start-ups

Overall G2 Score: 4.2/5

Pricing: There is a free plan which allows users to engage with up to 500 subscribers. Paid plans start at $16.15/month.

Founded in 1998 and trusted by more than 100,000 individuals and businesses, Aweber is one of the oldest email marketing services around. They take pride in being easy to use, which makes them very suitable for small businesses and start-ups. They also claim that they invented the autoresponder, which is no small feat.

One of the most outstanding features of Aweber is the templates they provide. Aweber offers over 700 responsive e-newsletter templates, which is considerably more than the amount most, if not all, their competitors offer.

As per autoresponder and automation options, Aweber allows users to create automations via custom rules. Users can send 3,000 emails per month in an autoresponder series, which is pretty good. Aweber makes it really easy for users to set up follow up emails based on time intervals.

With Aweber, users can create goals and/or combine tagging with automation rules to set up sophisticated autoresponders. Users can also create basic drip campaigns as well as complex customer journeys using IFTT-style workflows. Users can design flowcharts where their emails are sent based on customer actions like email opens, clicks, website visits, purchases, etc.

However, the options to trigger autoresponders based on these user actions are somewhat limited. You only have two triggers: when a contact is subscribed to a list and when a tag is applied. Also, the terminology can be confusing as both automations and autoresponders are called ‘Aweber Campaigns’.

Key features of Aweber

  • Drag-and-drop email builder
  • Wide range of responsive templates
  • Marketing automation options
  • Responsive email designs
  • Autoresponders
  • Importation of mailing list
  • Responsive email templates
  • A/B split testing
  • RSS/blog-to-email functionality
  • Landing pages
  • 6000+ stock photos
  • List segmentation
  • Third-party app integrations
  • Email, phone and live chat support

Pros of Aweber

  • Aweber is one of the oldest ESPs that exist and now has one of the best free email autoresponder tools in the market.
  • The free version contains all the features in the paid plans.
  • Users can import an existing email list in a wide range of file types (XLS, TXT, CSV, TSV and XLSX). Users can also add the email addresses of imported contacts directly onto an autoresponder cycle.
  • Aweber offers powerful segmentation and automation tools users can use to create detailed autoresponder series.
  • Aweber offers free plan users all the support materials, including live webinars and masterclasses.
  • Aweber can be integrated with top third-party software like OptinMonster, PayPal, and Unbounce.
  • Aweber regularly rolls out new features that are made available to all customers, including those on the free plan.
  • Aweber enables AMP for email.

Cons of Aweber

  • Aweber’s free trial only lasts for 30, which is not enough time for users to start making money from their lists.
  • Aweber can be expensive.
  • The free plan limits users to just 500 subscribers, which is really small.
  • Aweber bills users for both subscribed and unsubscribed contacts (unless the details of unsubscribed contacts are deleted).
  • The landing page builder doesn’t provide A/B split testing.
  • Users cannot include or exclude multiple segments at once when they want to send an e-newsletter.

7. Benchmark Email

Ideal for: SMEs and NPOs

Overall G2 Score: 4.1/5

Pricing: Benchmark Email offers a free plan that allows unlimited contacts and up to 250 emails per month. The paid plans start at $13/month.

Founded in 2004, Benchmark Email strives to provide its clientele with simple email marketing. This ESP helps small businesses grow their audience, engagement and revenue by offering an advanced set of automated and integrated tools.

I used Benchmark’s free plan briefly while searching for the best ESP for my marketing needs and I really liked the clean interface and the fact that it was incredibly easy to use. The feature set impressed me too. Benchmark pays a great deal of attention to design and their email templates are simply stunning. The drag-and-drop email editor was the bomb and it helped streamline the experience of editing emails.

Their tracking reports are adequately detailed too. Users can monitor their campaign performance using metrics like number of emails opened, open rates, unopened emails, links clicked, unsubscribes, and forwarded emails.

As per free autoresponder tools, Benchmark offers a feature called ‘Automation Lite’ on the free plan. This feature lets users use basic autoresponders, surveys, forms and reports. Users can use Automation Lite to create a welcome email series and other really simple autoresponder series. Users have to upgrade to a paid plan to be able to create more advanced automations. On the Pro plan, users can create automations based on birthdays, anniversaries, reminder dates and engagement automations.

However, I did not find the autoresponder editor very intuitive. Users cannot set sending time ranges for autoresponders and they can’t view autoresponders in a workflow. The deliverability rates are not very good either.

Key features of Benchmark Email

  • Drag-and-drop email editor
  • Code editor
  • Autoresponders
  • Email templates
  • CRM integration
  • Marketing automation options
  • A/B testing
  • Drip campaigns
  • Event management
  • Surveys and polls
  • Signup forms and popups
  • Campaign tracking
  • Customer journey funnels
  • Detailed reporting and analytics

Pros of Benchmark Email

  • Benchmark has a low learning curve.
  • The tracking reports on set email campaigns are in-depth.
  • Benchmark’s customer support is stellar.
  • Users can segment their list and data in a variety of ways.
  • Benchmark’s paid plans are very affordable.
  • Benchmark’s automation features are intuitive and extensive.

Cons of Benchmark Email

  • On the free plan, users can only send 250 emails per month, which is really limiting.
  • Benchmark’s email editor lags sometimes.
  • The deliverability rates are not too good as emails usually land in Gmail’s ‘Promotions’ tab or Spam.
  • The signup form options are limited.
  • Benchmark does not have a mobile preview feature or landing page editor.
  • Benchmark cannot integrate with Salesforce.

8. Sender

  • Constant Contact offers integrations with a wide range of third-party software like Gmail, Outlook and Shopify.

Cons of Constant Contact

  • There’s no free version. After the free 60 days is up, users have to pay to keep using their email list.
  • The dashboard lags sometimes.
  • The landing page builder is somewhat basic.
  • The templates are responsive but they aren’t flexible.
  • Users need to pay for the Email plus plan to use most of the automation features.
  • Constant Contact’s pricing plans are very expensive.
  • Constant Contact does not offer live support on weekends.

What makes a great free autoresponder tool?

Although there are quite a few email marketing tools that offer free plans, some don’t include automation and autoresponder features in their free plans. Instead, users get access to these essential marketing tools when they upgrade to a free plan. However, there are some ESPS that do offer autoresponder tools in their free plans (outlined below).

The major features the best free autoresponder tools should have are:

  • An intuitive email editor designed for newsletters, transactional emails and autoresponders.
  • Signup forms and popups for capturing subscriber information.
  • A workflow builder (preferably visual) that has templates for popular automation processes like welcome series emails, birthday responses and e-commerce transactions.
  • Customer workflows that target a specific subscriber group based on the pages they visit most and the actions they take on the website.
  • Segmentation and personalization in list management.
  • In-depth reports and analytics that allow users to see how effective their email sequences and automation campaigns are.
  • A/B split testing to make sure messages are optimized long before they are sent out.
  • Automation for messages that are related to e-commerce stores such as product recommendations, order notifications and abandoned carts.
  • Landing pages to increase the potential of acquiring new subscribers.
  • Links to social media platforms to instantly share information users send out to their contact list.

Wrapping Up

So now you might be wondering which free email autoresponder tool you should use. Well, out of the nine tools outlined above, there’s no one that can suit absolutely every individual and/or business. However, the size of your business and your budget should determine the tool you should use.

If you’re a startup or small business owner, you can try Sendinblue, Sender or Moosend. You can also use Constant Contact, but bear in mind that this autoresponder tool does not have a free forever plan. It only offers a 60-day free trial to try it out and determine if it would be good for you. If you’re working on a tight budget, HubSpot is also a great option as it is completely free.

If you’re a community organization non-profit, you can try Sendinblue (this works great if you have a small list of 300 people or fewer). Benchmark Email is also great as they offer a huge discount for NPOs.

Sendinblue, Sender and Moosend are great options if you need to send out transactional messages to your contacts. Sendinblue allows its users to send SMS messages as well. If you’re an online creative, ConvertKit or MailChimp will serve you well.

For online/ecommerce store owners that want to send things like abandoned cart campaigns and purchase confirmations, MailChimp, Sender and Constant Contact are all trusty options. If your list is large and you need a free email autoresponder, MailChimp has the most generous parameters.

However, if your e-commerce store or business is established and budget isn’t a concern, then I highly recommend that you take a look at Drip. They offer powerful automation options and advanced segmentation but I didn’t include in this list because they don’t have a free plan, and their pricing is a bit expensive. Another great option is ActiveCampaign. In this article, you’ll see how ActiveCampaign measures up when pitted against Drip. It will help you make the right decision if you decide to go for either one of the two.

As you must have noticed, there is no one-size-fits-all autoresponder tool out there. The kind of business you run, the size of your business, your marketing needs, and your budget are the key factors that influence which autoresponder tool you should use.

A lot of work goes into setting up and managing email campaigns.

Marketers have to create landing pages and forms, generate and nurture leads, identify which leads are ready to buy, create optimized content for their main prospects, craft and send sales and follow-up emails, track their contacts’ site activity and journey through the sales funnels, etc.

It can be an absolute headache to have to manually do all of this every time.

Enter email automation software.

Founded in 2001, MailChimp is one of, if not the most, popular email marketing software in the email marketing industry. MailChimp helps small businesses capture email leads and engage with their customers through its wide range of templates, and formidable automation and integration features.

MailChimp offers customizable automated workflows for contacts, e-commerce, special events, etc. The platform has solid autoresponder templates that can help users get started creating workflows. Users can also set up a welcome email series, and email sequences to recover abandoned carts.

I used MailChimp on my first blog, and I really liked that the ESP offered an interface that gives users a visual representation of their workflows.

Users are given the option to set up rules to send follow-up emails based on conditions like opens and clicks and behavior triggers like signing up to their email list or abandoning a cart. Users can also choose from the drip campaign templates available which cover things like customer acquisition, customer loyalty, customer reengagement, notifications and transactional emails.

There is also an If/Else/Wait logic feature that users can use to map their contact’s journey, but it isn’t very intuitive in my experience. However, MailChimp offers resources to help users understand the concepts of journey-mapping.

I also loved MailChimp’s landing page editor and form builder. They are some of the most intuitive ones I’ve used.

If you need simple automations and integrations, MailChimp will suffice. But if you want to manage very complex automations and workflows, you should check out some other MailChimp alternatives.

Cons of MailChimp

  • MailChimp’s emails usually end up in Gmail’s ‘Promotions’ tab.
  • Users cannot build custom automations with MailChimp.
  • The library of pre-built automation workflows is limited.
  • There is no workflow editor so it can get cumbersome for users to manage their automation chain.

Act-On offers users eight automated program templates that they can customize to meet their specific needs. They can do this via an easy-to-use drag-and-drop workflow editor. Workflows are done in a descending linear format so it is much easier for marketers who like text-based visualizations to create their workflows.

With more than 600,000 customers, Constant Contact has cemented itself as one of the best email marketing providers that exists. This email automation software is popular for its attractive templates, flexibility and broad feature suite. Apart from email marketing services, Constant Contact also includes features like event marketing, surveys and social media.

Constant Contact allows users to create time-based drip campaigns that send a series of automated emails and messages to subscribers. An area where Constant Contact excels, though, is the real-time tracking tools that shows which contacts are opening, clicking and sharing your emails. What Criteria Should a Good Email Automation Software Meet?

Depending on the needs of a business, automated email marketing campaigns can be really simple or really complex. Or somewhere in between.

These campaigns include behavioral automations, welcome email series, abandoned cart notifications, etc.

These automations save marketers a ton of time and help increase customer engagements and revenue. With the right tool, setting up automated email campaigns can be really easy.

The main things a good email automation software should allow marketers do are:

  • Create landing pages and forms without the need for coding knowledge
  • Set up advanced communication sequences
  • Track site visitors and how long they spend on each webpage
  • Track a prospect’s moves as they travel through a funnel
  • Send different emails based on a contact’s activity or inactivity
  • Optimize the campaign to suit their prospects through the use of A/B testing tools.
  • Manage social media marketing channels, posts and calendars from within the email automation tool
  • Display dynamic content
  • Identify and nurture leads that are most likely to buy
  • Provide advanced stats/reports
  • Integrate with a wide range of e-commerce tools and powerful tools used by enterprises e.g. messaging tools, paid ads tools, social media tools, webinar tools, etc.

With so many email automation software tools on the market, it can be pretty confusing to identify the right one for your needs.

Wrapping It Up

It’s astounding to know the amount of data you can collect and use with a modern email automation software. These tools help marketers personalize their customers’ experiences, improve their customer retention rate and scale their marketing strategy.

Of course, I cannot tell you that one particular email automation software is the best fit for you. It’s not a one-size-fits-all thing.

However, if you’re an online creative, email marketing beginner or a business owner operating on a tight budget, you could try ConvertKit, MailChimp or HubSpot. These ESPs have free versions that can help you save a ton of money and help you understand what email marketing is all about.

If you have an SME, NPO or e-commerce business, you can use Sendinblue, GetResponse or Constant Contact. Sendinblue and GetResponse work extremely well if you also need to send transactional emails.

If you have a small business that’s growing fast and you need an email automation software that can cater to your business needs however large it grows, you can trust Act-On and Marketo Engage to help you with that.

If you need to build a custom chatbot for your site visitors, Intercom’s got your back.

The choice you make as regards the right email automation software for your business really depends on your business needs, your budget and your email list size. Whatever these values are, I believe that one of the tools in this list would suit your business’ email marketing needs.

How can you make sure you’re hitting the right keywords and improving over time?

Keyword trackers, that’s how.

To know if your SEO strategy is ironclad, you have to find out how your pages rank on SERPs. Keyword trackers help you do that.

You can get valuable insights about your site’s SEO performance by knowing how your rankings have changed over time. When you analyze these data, you will understand the impact of your SEO strategy on search visibility, discover technical SEO issues and know where to focus on to increase organic traffic, conversions and revenue for your site.

What is a Keyword Tracker?

A keyword tracker, also known as a keyword rank tracker, is a tool that lets a user monitor their sites’ rankings for specific keywords in SERPs.

With a keyword tracker, you can see what position your keywords and webpages rank in on SERPs. Rank tracking is usually based on current rankings and historical keyword data, so you can analyze your ranking progress and its effect on organic traffic.

Good rank tracker tools usually have features that run audits on your site(s), diagnose any technical SEO issues, and show you how to fix these issues.

Some keyword trackers let you analyze your backlinks and monitor the sites that are linking to your webpages.

Some keyword trackers let you spy on your competition and see what keywords they rank for. This way, you’ll be able to implement an SEO strategy that will provide you even more favorable results than what your competitors are getting.

Many rank tracker tools are not solely keyword rank trackers. Instead, the keyword tracker tool is a feature inside of a full-featured SEO tool suite. Some of these tool suites include Ahrefs and Semrush.

There are also sole keyword trackers like AccuRanker and ProRankTracker. Then there are sole rank trackers that are suited mainly for enterprises, such as Conductor and Brightedge.

What Features Make a Good Keyword Tracker?

A good rank tracker is necessary if you want to boost your sites’ insights and optimization strategies. The keyword tracker you need should give you trustworthy information that can help you boost your sites’ rankings in SERPs.

The main features the best keyword tracker for you should have are:

  • Accurate keyword rank data that is frequently updated
  • Availability of historical rank data
  • Metrics that estimate how rank changes impact organic traffic
  • Ability to track thousands of keywords that are relevant to your industry
  • Ability to monitor your competitors

Ideal for: SaaS companies, eCommerce, startups and small businesses

Pricing: There is no free version. A free trial is available. The cost depends on the number of keywords and websites you want to track.

Overall G2 Score: 4.7/5

SEOmonitor is primarily a rank checker tool that is used to research keywords and content topics, and provides in-depth data on keyword rankings. This tool also has forecasting capabilities that help users overcome their industry’s challenges and develop better SEO strategies.

SEOmonitor takes the data from Google Search Console and Google Analytics, analyzes it, and gives you a complete breakdown of keywords that provide traffic to a specific website. Metrics like search volume, click-through rate, number of search visits from each keyword, average position, conversion rate and bounce rate. It also splits the organic traffic into branded traffic and non-branded traffic, and allows you to see a list of deleted keywords.

The Topic Explorer feature in SEOmonitor focuses on ‘topics’ rather than individual keywords only. This feature links a variety of keywords to a topic to find semantically-related keywords.

The Visibility Score feature offers a way to assess keywords beyond the normal ‘keyword difficulty’ metric some other tools have. This feature combines search volumes and rankings and makes them more insightful and easier to understand than any other tracking methods.

Key features of SEOmonitor

  • Automatic keyword research
  • Location and search engine-based track ranking
  • Mobile keyword ranking data
  • Opportunity indicator
  • Integration of site analytics
  • Comprehensive site audits
  • Visibility score
  • Backlink tool
  • Competitive comparisons
  • Business case builder

Pros of SEOmonitor

  • The search engine results update every 24 hours.

  • You can investigate your competitors’ keywords and find new opportunities.
  • You can calculate how much revenue you would make when you implement a specific keyword strategy and reach the top result.
  • You can download a screenshot of desktop and mobile SERPs as an html file.

Cons of SEOmonitor

  • The user interface can be a bit confusing.
  • It has a steep learning curve for new users.
  • It can get expensive because of the daily updates.
  • It can take a while to pull data. Reports are not always generated every 24 hours.
  • There’s a limit to the number of keywords you can track depending on the plan you choose.

3. Ahrefs

Source: Ahrefs

Ideal for: SEOs and owners of small to large websites

Pricing: Ahrefs does not offer a free plan or free trial. There’s a 7-day trial for $7 for the Lite and Standard plans. Monthly prices start at $99/month (Lite) and end at $999/month (Agency). If you pay annually, you get a discount and two months free.

Overall G2 Score: 4.6/5

When it was first created in 2011, Ahrefs was a simple backlinks index, but over the years, it has morphed into a full-featured SEO tools suite that covers all functionalities regarding backlinks, site crawling, rank tracking and content analysis.

The company has the largest backlinks indexes and crawled sites, with over 12 trillion historical backlinks and 6 billion crawled web pages each day. The keyword research features cover all the major search engines (including Google, Bing, and Yahoo!), Amazon and YouTube.

Very recently I became a paying user of Ahrefs after trying out basically every keyword research tool on the planet. The feature I find myself using the most is the Ahrefs Keyword Explorer tool. With this keyword research tool, you’ll get an overview page that shows bar charts covering the total search volume, clicks, volume distribution and difficulty of the search queries. There are also tables that break down SERP features, top countries by volume, keyword suggestions and traffic quantity by pages and domains.

The Metrics tab provides users with accurate individual metrics that cover search volume, clicks per search and return rate. Google Keyword Planner shows the positions of URLs in SERPs and the SEO strength of a page. Ahrefs also enhanced its SERP results to include a SERP position history chart that enables a user to track rank changes over time. It also incorporated the new Featured Snippets feature into the results page.

The content exploration facility in Ahrefs is also pretty solid. There you can discover new topics and identify backlink opportunities.

Ahrefs offers one of the best keyword tracker tools, which provides extensive information for any keyword you enter into the tracking setup. The rank tracker uses metrics to show you information for all your projects and tracking campaigns. These metrics include: visibility, positions, average position, distribution, traffic, SERP features, locations, keywords, and competitors.

In fact, many content strategy courses, including Omniscient Digital’s content course, use Ahrefs to illustrate many lessons. It’s that good!

  • Ad-hoc keyword research

Overall G2 Score: 4.6/5

Unlike Ahrefs and Semrush, AccuRanker is solely a keyword rank tracking tool that lets users analyze SERP history to see how rankings have changed over time, and what keywords drive the most traffic to their sites and competitors’ sites.

AccuRanker is popularly touted to be the best keyword tracker, and it is trusted by more than 20,000 agencies, SEOs and brands including HBO and HubSpot. This keyword tracker is fast and reliable and offers a wide array of functionalities that makes it stand above most other keyword trackers on the market.

When I was in search of a good keyword research tool for my site, I came across AccuRanker and tried its 14-day free trial and I was amazed. I observed that AccuRanker lives up to its name. Cons of AccuRanker

  • Refreshing the data can be slow at times.
  • It is not a full SEO tool suite. It can only track keyword rankings, so you still need to use other SEO tools.

6. Google Search Console

Source: Google Search Console

Ideal for: Small businesses, sites and blogs

Pricing: Google Search Console is a free tool

Overall G2 Score: 4.6/5

Formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools, Google Search Console is an SEO tool that helps users measure their website’s performance, search traffic, and technical issues. It also helps improve ranking in Google search engine results.

I often use Google Search Console to assess my beauty blog, and I love it for two major reasons. The first is that it’s completely free (who doesn’t like free things?). The second reason is that it provides very helpful metrics to help you understand your site performance and how to improve your rankings.

Google Search Console is good at diagnosing site indexing and technical SEO issues. You also get invaluable keyword data (new keywords, popular keywords, keywords with high and low CTR, related keywords, etc.). GSC can also show you which sites are linking to yours. I also love that you can link Google Analytics to Google Search Console.

However, I noticed that the rank tracking/position data can be inaccurate at times, especially if your site’s clicks and impressions are low. That’s part of the reason I don’t use Google Search Console as my sole SEO tool (I use Ahrefs as it’s a more competent rank tracking tool). I also use Google Ads as a direct GSC alternative.

Key features of Google Search Console

  • Analysis of keywords through search queries
  • Access to user interaction
  • Submission of pages for indexing
  • Integration of Google analytics
  • Show the sites that link to yours
  • Submission of XML sitemaps
  • Diagnosis of site data and technical issues
  • Alerts when site issues are diagnosed

Pros of Google Search Console

  • It has a neat and clean UX design.
  • You can track and monitor your site’s backlinks.
  • You will have access to valuable site data like total clicks over a period of time, total impressions, average CTR and position, queries your blog ranks for, and location-based and device-based clicks/visits.
  • You can find and fix site issues concerning site crawling, site loading, security, website indexation, mobile usability, and structured data.
  • You can find new keywords and queries that have a high click-through rate.
  • You can measure and ascertain the performance and effectiveness of your keyword campaigns.
  • Google Search Console makes it easier for you to identify and disavow bad links.
  • You’ll get detailed insights on search queries to help you find opportunities for clients.
  • You can directly submit a sitemap to Google for crawling.

Cons of Google Search Console

  • The UI might not be the most intuitive for some users.
  • Unless you have a large amount of clicks and impressions, the position ranking data provided might not be accurate.
  • The error page might not get updated quickly so the errors that you have previously fixed might keep showing up.
  • You cannot submit an HTML sitemap.
  • It does not provide site data for any search engines apart from Google

7. Semrush

Source: Semrush

Ideal for: Businesses of any size

Pricing: The Pro and Guru plans offer a free trial that lasts seven days. For the annual billing, plans start at $119.95/month (The Pro plan). The most expensive plan—The Business plan—costs $449.95/month. If you purchase the plans annually, you can save 16% as opposed to purchasing them monthly.

Overall G2 Score: 4.5/5

Semrush is not solely a keyword tracking tool. It is actually an all-in-one tool suite that helps marketers in aspects such as SEO, PPC, keyword research, content marketing, campaign management, competitive research, amongst others.

Created in 2008, Semrush is one of the top SEO software today and it serves a very large number of users—about 6 million users, according to their team.

I tried the free trial of the Pro plan when I was in search of a good keyword research tool that would serve my needs as a blogger. The first thing I noticed was that Semrush provides a shit ton of valuable information. You can use this information to create traffic-attracting content, find link-building opportunities, and make small changes to your site content so that you rank higher in SERP.

With Semrush, you get keyword suggestions that you can use to write posts that will rank well in search results (based on the phrase(s) you enter). You will also be able to see how difficult it would be to rank for certain phrases/keywords. Semrush also suggests websites you can approach to get quality backlinks.

You can also perform an SEO audit on your website with Semrush. You can use the audit to know if there are any technical improvements you can make to your site to help you rank higher in search results. It’s also really easy to perform a domain analysis with Semrush. Just enter a domain URL in the ‘domain overview’ section and you’ll get information on how well that domain is performing in search results.

Overall G2 Score: 4.5/5

Created by Slovakian IT company, Mangools, SERPWatcher is a simple and straightforward rank tracker that allows users to see where they rank for specific keywords as they fluctuate or stabilize in search engine ranking results. SERPWatcher aims to make keyword tracking effective and easy to use with its beginner-friendly UI and email alerts to help you monitor your SERP data as it changes.

The SERPWatcher dashboard shows you all the important data you need including a list of keywords you’re tracking, the keyword ranking positions, estimated search volume for each keyword, amongst others. You also get a report that contains the dominance index for each domain you track.

Unlike other keyword tracking tools, Mangools does not cram too many features into SERPWatcher. In fact, SERPWatcher is just for keyword rank tracking alone. Mangools made other features such as backlink monitoring, keyword research and site audit into separate tools, which is great for SEO beginners as it makes them less likely to be overwhelmed by too many functionalities.

The great thing about this approach is that you don’t have to subscribe to each tool separately. Once you subscribe to any SERPWatcher plan, you’ll have access to all the apps. These apps include:

  • KWFinder, which allows you to search a specific keyword or domain and gives you detailed information about related keywords.
  • SERPChecker, which allows you to monitor your competitors and see what keywords they are ranking for.
  • LinkMiner, a backlink analysis tool that shows you a comprehensive list of all the site domains that are linking to yours.
  • SiteProfiler, which provides you with a quick overview of your site’s SEO performance.

  • You can retain keyword rank data for up to one year.

Cons of SERPWatcher

  • Some of the data provided are not 100% accurate all the time.
  • SERPWatcher tracks keyword data for Google only. It does not do the same for other major search engines.
  • The data provided might be subpar in the eyes of SEO experts.
  • Though the SiteProfiler tool is similar to a site audit tool, it offers very limited information. It only assesses your top content based on two metrics only: social media (Facebook) and referring domains. It does not identify any SEO issues your site might have.

Conclusion

No keyword tracker is the absolute best keyword tracker for every business or site. The keyword tracker you choose should depend on your business needs and your budget.

If you’re a beginner or operate on a tight budget, you should take advantage of a free tool like Google Search Console. You could also try tools that offer a free trial like SE Ranking, ProRankTracker or SERPWatcher.

If you run a small business or personal website/blog, you can use tools like Semrush or Ahrefs that you can adapt to your specific needs.

If you run an agency and need white label reporting, you can choose ProRankTracker or AccuRanker.

If you run an enterprise, Conductor and Brightedge are your best bets. Brightedge is also great for content marketers who want to optimize their content.

If you are a blogger or digital marketer and you need an all-in-one SEO tool suite that also has a keyword rank tracking feature, consider using SERPWatcher, Semrush, SEOmonitor or Ahrefs. We often just use Ahrefs for basic keyword tracking, and it gets the job done just fine (with some edge case limitations).

Remember that your choice depends on the tools that you want and the cash you’re willing to invest.

What is Constant Contact? Founded in 1995, Constant Contact is one of the oldest ESPs to exist. It caters to small businesses, eCommerce businesses, nonprofits and individuals, providing tools they need to capture email leads and scale their growth exponentially. Constant Contact boasts powerful features like drag-and-drop editors, A/B split testing, campaign management, autoresponders, tag-based data segmentation, automation options, ROI tracking, customizable CTA buttons, CRM and data analysis tools, to mention a few. Over the years, Constant Contact has included several features like social media campaigns and customer surveys that distinguish them from their competitors. But just as with every ESP, Constant Contact has upsides and downsides. Pros of Constant Contact
  • The UI is intuitive and easy-to-use.
  • It is great for capturing email leads and engaging with them.
  • It offers social media campaign integration.
  • It has a strong data security framework in place.
  • Unlike most of its competitors, Constant Contact’s free trial lasts for 60 days.
  • There is a great discount for nonprofits.
  • There is a high deliverability rate of 97%.
  • The email templates are responsive and elegant.
Cons of Constant Contact
  • As your list grows, the plans become pricier.
  • There is no live support on weekends.
  • There is no advanced reporting and analysis.
  • Although the templates are responsive, they lack flexibility.
  • Some functionality is obscure and may confuse new users.
Although Constant Contact serves over 600,000 businesses and accrues over $400 million annually, many email marketers are finding that this ESP does not quite satisfy them. Whether the problem is that it is too pricey or less advanced than they’d like, many marketers are trying out Constant Contact competitors that may better fit their needs.

The paid plans start at $29/month (the Creator plan). Free trials for the paid plans last 14 days Created in 2013, ConvertKit is a relatively new, but powerful email service provider that is very easy to use. This Constant Contact alternative is most suited for content creators and SMEs to help grow their audiences. I have personally used ConvertKit to build email lists for multiple blogs, and the feature I love most is the targeted emails and detailed segmentation features. The automations, tagging, sequences and list management are extremely easy to do and you don’t have to spend extra bucks taking a course on how to create an automated workflow on ConvertKit. At least I didn’t—and I’m the least tech-savvy person on the face of the earth. ConvertKit offers more advanced automation options than Constant Contact. Conclusion

The best ESP for everyone does not exist. In the end, the ESP you choose should depend on your business needs and your budget. If you are an email marketing beginner or working on a low budget, then you should take advantage of the ESPs that offer free plans. If you’re a blogger or creative, ESPs like MailerLite and ConvertKit will serve you really well. Benchmark Email is especially great if you run a non-profit organization. If your business is related to tourism, or banking, SendPulse is your guy (or girl!). SendPulse and Sendinblue work exceptionally well for eCommerce businesses. If your business needs complex marketing features, ActiveCampaign and GetResponse are great. SMEs can use almost all the ESPs on this list. Whatever your needs are, I’m sure that one of these Constant Contact competitors will meet them.
